India Post has invited online applications for Gramin Dak Sevak engagement under Schedule-II, July 2026, for BPM, ABPM and Dak Sevak posts. Candidates with Class 10th qualification can register from 31 August 2026 and apply online by 21 September 2026.

Eligibility / Qualification

Educational Qualification

  • Candidates must have passed the Secondary School Examination (Class 10th) from a recognised Board of School Education recognised by the Government of India, State Government or Union Territory.
  • Passing marks in Mathematics and English are compulsory.
  • Equivalent qualifications from other boards are not accepted for GDS engagement.
  • Candidates must have studied the prescribed local language up to at least Class 10th from a recognised board.
  • Candidates must possess knowledge of computers, knowledge of cycling and adequate means of livelihood.
  • Past experience or service of any kind will not be considered for selection.
  • Selected candidates must provide undertakings regarding computer knowledge, cycling ability and an additional source of income.

For Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Sikkim and Nagaland, candidates may be required to produce a certificate of proficiency in the prescribed local language or tribal dialect from the competent authority during document verification.

Service Conditions and Job Profile

GDS personnel are not regular Central Government employees. Their service conditions are governed by the Department of Posts, Gramin Dak Sevaks (Conduct and Engagement) Rules, 2020, as amended from time to time. They hold civil posts outside the regular civil services and generally serve in rural areas.

GDS personnel are required to work for a minimum of four hours and a maximum of five hours per day and cannot be retained beyond 65 years of age. They must have an additional source of income for adequate livelihood for themselves and their families.

Branch Postmaster

  • Conduct day-to-day operations of the Branch Post Office and India Post Payments Bank.
  • Handle mail conveyance and delivery in single-handed Branch Post Offices.
  • Promote postal products and services and operate Customer Service Centres.
  • Perform ABPM duties when ordered or when an ABPM is unavailable.
  • Arrange accommodation for the Branch Post Office at personal cost after selection and before engagement.
  • Reside in the village where the Branch Post Office is functioning.

Assistant Branch Postmaster

  • Sell stamps and stationery.
  • Convey and deliver mail at the doorstep.
  • Handle deposits, payments and other India Post Payments Bank transactions.
  • Assist the BPM in postal operations and customer service activities.
  • Perform BPM duties when ordered or when the BPM is unavailable.
  • Reside within the delivery jurisdiction of the concerned Branch Post Office.

Dak Sevak

  • Sell stamps and stationery and deliver mail at the doorstep.
  • Handle deposits, payments and other India Post Payments Bank transactions.
  • Work in Post Offices, Sorting Offices, Mail Offices, Transit Mail Offices and Delivery Centres.
  • Handle mail bags and parcels, transhipment of bags and delivery-related activities.
  • Assist Postmasters, Sub-Postmasters and other senior officers in the smooth functioning of Post Offices.
  • Reside within the delivery jurisdiction of the attached Head Office or Sub-Office.

Selection Process

Selection will be based on a system-generated merit list prepared from the Class 10th Secondary School Examination marks. There is no written examination mentioned in the notification.

  1. One-time registration and online application.
  2. Preparation of merit list based on Class 10th marks or valid conversion of grades and points.
  3. Shortlisting through the system-generated merit list.
  4. Physical verification of original documents.
  5. Issue of offer of provisional engagement.
  6. Completion of pre-engagement formalities, including three days of basic training and arrangement of accommodation wherever applicable.
  7. Police antecedent and certificate verification.
  8. Final order of engagement.

The merit percentage will be calculated up to four decimal places. Where only grades are available, the Grade Point will be multiplied by 9.5. Where CGPA is available, it will also be multiplied by 9.5. In case both subject-wise grades and CGPA are available, the higher marks will be considered.

For Tamil Nadu State Board of School Examinations candidates who received only a pass certificate for the 2020-2021 academic year, the system will award a uniform 66.67%, subject to selecting “Pass” against each subject.

In the event of a tie, priority will generally be given in the following order: older date of birth, reserved-category transwomen and female candidates, reserved-category transmen and male candidates, followed by unreserved-category transwomen, female, transmen and male candidates. The Department may prescribe additional tie-breaking criteria.

Document Verification

Shortlisted candidates must report to the designated Divisional or Unit Head within 15 days from the date of shortlisting. Failure to report within the stipulated period will result in cancellation of candidature.

Candidates must carry the following documents in original along with two sets of self-attested photocopies, wherever applicable:

  • Class 10th marks sheet
  • Identity proof
  • Date of birth proof
  • Caste certificate
  • PwBD certificate
  • EWS certificate
  • Transgender certificate
  • Compulsory medical certificate issued by a medical officer of a Government Hospital, Government Dispensary or Government Primary Health Centre
  • Certificate of knowledge of the prescribed tribal, local dialect or language for Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Goa or Nagaland candidates

After successful document verification, candidates must complete joining formalities within 30 days from the date of the offer of provisional engagement. Failure to complete the formalities or join within this period may result in cancellation and the post may be offered to the next candidate.

Salary / Pay Scale

GDS personnel receive Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA), which carries an annual increase of 3%, subject to the conditions prescribed in the GDS Rules. They are also eligible for Dearness Allowance on TRCA and certain other allowances and social security benefits, including GDS Gratuity and the Service Discharge Benefit Scheme.

Important Instructions

  • Only one registration is permitted per candidate. Multiple or duplicate registrations and applications are strictly prohibited.
  • Mobile number and email ID used for registration cannot be changed.
  • Candidate details must match the Class 10th marksheet, including name, date of birth, father's or guardian's name and mother's name.
  • Only a recent photograph and signature are required to be uploaded with the application.
  • Photograph must be in JPG/JPEG format, 30 KB to 100 KB, with recommended dimensions of 320 × 400 pixels.
  • Signature must be in JPG/JPEG format, 20 KB to 100 KB, with recommended dimensions of 300 × 120 pixels.
  • Blurred or illegible photographs and signatures may lead to rejection.
  • Candidates dismissed, removed or compulsorily retired from Government service or GDS service as a disciplinary penalty are barred from applying.
  • No person holding an elective office will be considered for engagement.
  • Selected candidates must not undertake outside activities detrimental to the business or interests of the Post Office or India Post Payments Bank.
  • The Department may verify Class 10th marksheets through API Setu, DigiLocker or the official website of the concerned educational board.
  • The Department reserves the right to modify, cancel or revise the notification, vacancies or engagement process.
