Selection Process

  1. Preparation of a merit list based on the average percentage of marks obtained in Matriculation and ITI, with equal weightage to both.
  2. Shortlisting of candidates for Document/Certificate Verification up to 1.5 times the notified vacancies.
  3. Document and certificate verification.
  4. Medical fitness verification.
  5. Preparation of the final unit-wise, trade-wise and community-wise merit list.

There will be no written examination and no viva voce. If two candidates have the same marks, the older candidate will be preferred. If their dates of birth are also the same, the candidate who passed Matriculation earlier will be preferred.

The merit list will be prepared using the total marks of all subjects in the Matriculation marksheet, including optional, additional or alternate subjects. CGPA must be converted into actual marks. For ITI, the average marks for all semesters of the relevant trade will be considered. Any discrepancy between marks entered online and original certificates may lead to rejection.

Medical Fitness and Physical Standards

Candidates called for Document Verification must submit the prescribed medical fitness certificate signed by a Government-authorized Gazetted Doctor not below the rank of Assistant Surgeon of a Central or State Government hospital.

The prescribed minimum physical standards include:

  • Height: 137 centimetres.
  • Weight: 25.4 kilograms.
  • Chest expansion: At least 3.8 centimetres.
  • Candidates must be free from contagious or infectious diseases and tuberculosis.
  • Hearing must be satisfactory in both ears; hearing aids are not permitted.
  • Candidates must satisfy the prescribed standards relating to vision, skin, speech, alimentary, cardiovascular, respiratory, genito-urinary, skeletal, nervous and glandular systems.
  • Blood pressure should not exceed 140 systolic and 85 diastolic; systolic blood pressure below 100 may lead to rejection.

A candidate who does not meet the minimum height, weight or chest standards may still be considered if certified physically fit for the particular trade by a Medical Officer not below the rank of Assistant Surgeon (Gazetted).

PwBD candidates can claim reservation only with a disability certificate issued by a competent Medical Board in the prescribed format. Trade-specific disability conditions apply for locomotor, visual, hearing and multiple disabilities.

Training Period and Stipend

Selected candidates will undergo apprenticeship training for one year. They will receive a stipend at the prescribed rate under the applicable rules of the concerned State Government and instructions issued by the Railway Board.

Completion of apprenticeship training does not create any right to employment in Indian Railways. The employer is not obligated to offer employment after completion of training, and the apprentice is not obligated to accept employment. On successful completion of training and passing the prescribed proficiency test, the National Council for Vocational Training will issue a certificate of proficiency in the designated trade.
