Opening Overview

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has released the Junior Engineer Examination, 2026 notification for recruitment to various Junior Engineer posts in Government of India organizations and for the post of Scientific Assistant in the India Meteorological Department (IMD). A total of 1,748 tentative vacancies are available. Eligible candidates with the required degree or diploma in the relevant engineering/science discipline can submit the online application from 02/09/2026 to 22/09/2026.

The posts are classified as Group B posts in Pay Level-6, with a pay scale of ₹35,400–₹1,12,400 under the 7th Central Pay Commission.

Application Fee

The fee can be paid only through online modes including BHIM UPI, Net Banking, Visa, MasterCard, Maestro or RuPay Debit Card. The fee is non-refundable and will not be adjusted against any other examination or selection.

Application Correction Charges

Correction charges are applicable to all candidates, irrespective of gender or category. A candidate can correct and resubmit the application a maximum of two times during the correction window.

Age Limit

The crucial date for age calculation is 01/08/2026.

Age Relaxation

The date of birth entered in the application must match the Matriculation or Secondary Examination Certificate. Any mismatch may result in cancellation of candidature.

Vacancy Details

The Commission has notified 1,748 tentative vacancies for Junior Engineer and Scientific Assistant posts. The final post-wise and category-wise vacancy details will be published by SSC on its website. State-wise or zone-wise vacancies are not collected by the Commission; candidates must contact the concerned user department for such information.

Eligibility / Qualification

Junior Engineer (Civil)

• Border Roads Organization: Degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized university/institute; or three-year Diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognized university, institute or board with two years of experience in planning, execution or maintenance of civil engineering works.
• Brahmaputra Board: Three-year Diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognized university or institution.
• Central Water Commission: Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognized university or institution.
• CPWD: Diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognized university or institute.
• Central Water and Power Research Station: Diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognized institute.
• Military Engineer Services: Degree in Civil Engineering; or three-year Diploma in Civil Engineering with two years of experience in planning, execution and maintenance of civil engineering works.
• NTRO: Diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognized university or institution.
• Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships: Degree in Civil Engineering; or Diploma in Civil Engineering with three years of experience; or equivalent qualification.
• Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying: Degree or three-year Diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognized university or institute.

Junior Engineer (Electrical)

• CPWD: Diploma in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university or institute.
• Central Water and Power Research Station: Diploma in Electrical Engineering from a recognized institute.
• DGQA-NAVAL: Degree in Electrical Engineering; or three-year Diploma in Electrical Engineering with two years of experience in the respective field.
• Farakka Barrage Project: Diploma in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university, institute or board.
• Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships: Degree in Electrical Engineering; or Diploma in Electrical Engineering with three years of experience; or equivalent qualification.

Junior Engineer (Mechanical)

• Central Water Commission: Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university or institution.
• DGQA-NAVAL: Degree in Mechanical Engineering; or three-year Diploma in Mechanical Engineering with two years of experience in the respective field.

Junior Engineer (Electrical & Mechanical)

• Border Roads Organization: Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering; or three-year Diploma in Electrical, Automobile or Mechanical Engineering with two years of experience in planning, execution or maintenance of electrical or mechanical engineering works.
• Military Engineer Services: Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering; or three-year Diploma in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering with two years of experience in planning, execution and maintenance of electrical or mechanical engineering works.

Junior Engineer (Telecom)

• Department of Telecommunications: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Technology in Electrical, Electronics, Electrical Communications, Computer Science, Telecommunications, Information Technology or Instrumentation from a recognized university or institute.

Scientific Assistant in IMD

Candidates must possess any one of the following from a recognized institution or university:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Science with Physics as one of the subjects; or
• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Computer Applications; or
• Bachelor’s Degree in Electronics, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electronics Telecommunication Engineering, Instrumentation, Information Technology, Telecommunication Engineering or Communication Engineering.

Important Qualification Conditions

• Where experience is prescribed, it must have been acquired after completion of the required educational qualification.
• Internship, training or research experience obtained during the course of acquiring the educational qualification will not be counted as prescribed experience.
• Candidates must produce original educational qualification and experience certificates during Document Verification.
• The result of the essential qualification must have been declared by the university or institute on or before the prescribed cut-off date.
• Engineering qualifications obtained through Open and Distance Learning or online mode in disciplines prohibited under applicable UGC regulations will not be accepted unless recognized under applicable statutory provisions, regulations or judicial orders.
• Candidates opting for Junior Engineer (Mechanical) may also be eligible for Junior Engineer (Electrical & Mechanical).
• Candidates opting for Junior Engineer (Telecom) may also be eligible for Scientific Assistant in IMD or Junior Engineer (Electrical), subject to fulfilling the respective educational qualification.
• Candidates opting for Junior Engineer (Electrical) may also be eligible for Junior Engineer (Telecom) and Junior Engineer (Electrical & Mechanical), subject to fulfilling the respective requirements.
• Candidates opting for Scientific Assistant may also be eligible for Junior Engineer (Telecom), subject to fulfilling its educational qualification.

Nationality

A candidate must be:

1. A citizen of India; or
2. A subject of Nepal; or
3. A subject of Bhutan; or
4. A person of Indian origin who has migrated from specified countries with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Candidates belonging to Nepal, Bhutan or the specified migrated categories must possess an eligibility certificate issued by the Government of India wherever required.

Exam Pattern

The examination will be conducted in two Computer-Based Examination papers.

Candidates eligible for a scribe will receive 2 hours and 40 minutes for each paper.

Subject Parts

Paper-I is qualifying in nature and candidates will be shortlisted for Paper-II on the basis of normalized Paper-I marks. Final merit will be prepared using normalized Paper-II marks and post/department preferences.

The examination will consist of objective-type, multiple-choice questions in Hindi and English. There will be negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer in Paper-I and 1 mark for each wrong answer in Paper-II.

A scientific calculator will be available on the computer screen. Physical calculators and physical copies of reference tables will not be permitted inside the examination laboratory. The relevant IS 456:2000 table and steam table, wherever required, will be available on the candidate’s computer console.

Indicative Syllabus

Paper-I General Intelligence and Reasoning

Questions may include analogies, similarities and differences, space visualization, problem-solving, analysis, judgment, decision-making, visual memory, observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning, verbal and figure classification, number series, abstract ideas, symbols, arithmetical computations and analytical functions.

Paper-I General Awareness

Questions will cover current events, everyday observations and scientific aspects, India and neighbouring countries, History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General Polity and Scientific Research.

Part-A: Civil and Structural Engineering

Engineering Mechanics, Solid Mechanics, Structural Analysis, Construction Materials and Management, Estimating, Costing and Valuation, Concrete Structures, Steel Structures, Surveying, Soil Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Hydraulics, Hydrology, Irrigation Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Transportation Engineering, highway design, railway track design, pavement design and traffic engineering.

Part-B: Electrical Engineering

Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering, electrical circuits, network solution methods, Kirchhoff’s laws, network theorems, magnetic circuits, AC fundamentals, measurement and measuring instruments, electrical machines, transformers, DC and AC machines, synchronous generators, power generation, transmission and distribution, estimation and costing, utilization of electrical energy, basic electronics and power electronics.

Part-C: Mechanical Engineering

Engineering Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Theory of Machines, Machine Design, Materials Science and Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulic Machinery, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Metrology and Measurement, Advanced Manufacturing Processes, CAD/CAM, CNC machines, PLC, robotics and flexible manufacturing systems.

Part-F: Physics

Mathematical Methods, Mechanics, General Properties of Matter, Oscillations, Waves, Optics, Electricity, Magnetism, Kinetic Theory, Thermodynamics, Modern Physics, Solid State Physics, Semiconductor Devices, Analog Electronics and Digital Electronics.

Part-G: Telecommunication Engineering

Engineering Mathematics, Network Analysis, Signals and Systems, Electronic Devices, Analog Circuits, Digital Circuits, Control Systems, Analog Communications, Digital Communications and Electromagnetics, including transmission lines, waveguides, optical fibres and antennas.

Selection Process

1. Computer-Based Examination Paper-I.
2. Category-wise shortlisting for Paper-II on the basis of normalized Paper-I marks.
3. Computer-Based Examination Paper-II.
4. Online post and department preference submission.
5. First Round of Tentative Allocation and final allocation based on Paper-II performance and preferences.
6. Document Verification by the concerned user department.
7. Physical Efficiency Test and physical/medical standards for candidates selected for BRO posts.

Minimum qualifying marks in both papers are 30% for Unreserved candidates, 25% for OBC/EWS candidates and 20% for all other categories. Paper-I remains qualifying in nature, while final selection is based on Paper-II performance and post/department preference.

Separate merit lists will be prepared for Junior Engineer (Civil), Junior Engineer (Electrical & Mechanical), Junior Engineer (Telecom) and Scientific Assistant in IMD.

Salary / Pay Scale

The posts are Group B posts in Pay Level-6 of the 7th Central Pay Commission, carrying a pay scale of ₹35,400–₹1,12,400, along with admissible allowances and benefits as per Government of India rules.

All selected candidates are liable to serve anywhere in India under All India Service Liability. Candidates may also be allotted a State, Union Territory or zone by the concerned user organization.

BRO Physical Standards and Medical Requirements

Only male candidates are eligible for Junior Engineer posts in the Border Roads Organization. Candidates applying for BRO posts must satisfy the prescribed Physical Efficiency Test, physical standards and medical standards.

Physical Efficiency Test

The test will be conducted at GREF Centre, Pune or the applicable recruitment centre. Candidates qualifying through SSC must pass this test before further medical examination.

Region-wise Physical Standards for BRO

A relaxation of 2 cm in height, 1 cm in chest and 2 kg in weight is provided in specified cases for sons of serving or ex-GREF personnel and eligible dependent cases.

BRO Medical Standards

Candidates must be in sound health and free from physical or medical conditions that may affect duties in remote, high-altitude, difficult or hilly areas. Visual acuity must generally be at least 6/12 in each eye or 6/6 in the right eye and 6/24 in the left eye, subject to the detailed standards in the notification.

PwBD and Scribe Provisions

The notification identifies suitable disability categories for various posts, subject to exemptions obtained by the concerned organizations. Candidates seeking a scribe, technology or assistive device must select the facility in the online application and upload the required certificate in the prescribed format.

• A scribe must complete One-Time Registration and Aadhaar-Based Authentication.
• A scribe cannot assist more than one candidate in the same examination.
• A candidate appearing in the examination cannot act as a scribe for another candidate in the same examination.
• The qualification of an own scribe must be one level below the qualification of the candidate.
• Compensatory time of 20 minutes per hour will be provided to eligible candidates.
• Candidates using a scribe must carry the prescribed medical certificate, undertaking and scribe identity documents.

Examination Centre Information

Candidates may select three examination centres in the same SSC region, in order of preference. The selected centres may be anywhere in India within the applicable regional jurisdiction. Requests for changing the centre later will not be accepted.

SSC examination regions include Central, Eastern, Karnataka-Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, North Eastern, Northern, North Western, Southern and Western Regions. The detailed city-wise centre list and centre codes are provided in the official examination notice.

Admission Certificate and Examination Instructions

Admission Certificates will be made available online on the SSC website and will not be sent by post or email. Candidates should download the Admission Certificate before the examination and carry its printout to the examination centre.

Candidates who have not undergone Aadhaar-Based Authentication must report two hours before the scheduled examination time and carry:

• Printed Admission Certificate.
• At least two recent passport-size colour photographs.
• Original valid photo identity proof containing the date of birth as printed on the Admission Certificate.
• Additional original date-of-birth proof if the photo identity document does not show the date of birth.

Candidates using a scribe must also carry the required medical certificate, undertaking and photocopy of the scribe’s identity proof.

Document Verification

Provisionally shortlisted candidates will be called for Document Verification by the concerned user department after declaration of the final result. Candidates must produce original documents and photocopies, including:

• Matriculation or Secondary Certificate.
• Educational Qualification Certificate.
• Experience Certificate, wherever applicable.
• SC, ST, OBC, EWS, PwBD or ESM certificate, wherever applicable.
• Certificate supporting age relaxation.
• Ex-Servicemen documents, where applicable.
• No Objection Certificate for candidates employed in Government or Government undertakings.
• Documents supporting change of name, wherever applicable.
• Any other document specified in the Admission Certificate or by the user department.

Candidature will remain provisional until the concerned authority verifies all educational, category, experience and other certificates.

Important Instructions

• Candidates must complete One-Time Registration on the new SSC website. OTR generated on the old website will not function on the new website.
• Only one application form may be submitted during the normal application period.
• Candidates must enter their name, father’s name, mother’s name, date of birth and Matriculation details exactly as recorded in the Matriculation Certificate.
• The application module captures a live photograph. The photograph must be clear, frontal, properly lit and without a cap, mask, spectacles or goggles.
• The scanned signature should be in JPEG/JPG format, approximately 10–20 KB, with dimensions of about 6.0 cm by 2.0 cm.
• Aadhaar-Based Authentication is available as an option. Candidates who use it receive exemption from certain photograph, signature and examination identity verification requirements specified in the notice.
• Candidates must regularly check the SSC website and the concerned regional website for examination dates, vacancy updates, Admission Certificates and other notices.
• Any concealment, false declaration, impersonation, forged document, unfair means or malpractice may lead to cancellation of candidature and debarment from future SSC examinations.

Tie-Breaking Rules

If two or more candidates obtain equal aggregate marks in Paper-II, the tie will be resolved in the following order:

1. Marks in Part I of Paper-I, General Intelligence and Reasoning.
2. Marks in Part II of Paper-I, General Awareness.
3. Date of birth, with the older candidate placed higher.
4. Alphabetical order of the candidates’ names.

All India Service Liability

Selected candidates may be posted anywhere in India. The concerned user organization may allot a State, Union Territory or zone, and candidates may be required to acquire proficiency in the local language of the allotted area for confirmation of appointment.
