Seats are distributed among the University of Allahabad campus and constituent colleges. The number of seats may change depending on supervisor availability and the decision of the competent authority. The University may withdraw any subject or modify the number of seats at any stage of the admission process.
Eligibility / Qualification
Applicants must fulfil the eligibility conditions prescribed under the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022 and the prevailing Ph.D. Ordinance of the University of Allahabad.
General Eligibility
- A 1-year/2-semester Master’s degree after a 4-year/8-semester Bachelor’s degree, or a 2-year/4-semester Master’s degree after a 3-year/6-semester Bachelor’s degree, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade.
- Applicants seeking admission on the basis of a 4-year/8-semester Bachelor’s degree must have at least 75% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade.
- A 5% relaxation in minimum marks may be allowed for SC, ST, OBC Non-Creamy Layer, EWS, PwBD and other eligible categories as per applicable UGC rules.
- Marks will not be rounded off to the next higher integer for determining eligibility.
- The qualifying degree must be in the relevant subject from a UGC-recognised university or institution.
Qualifying Examinations
Except for exempted categories, applicants must qualify in the UGC/CSIR-NET Examination for Ph.D. admission. Depending on the relevant subject, the following may also be considered:
- Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET) for DBT-Junior Research Fellowship.
- DHR-Biomedical Research Eligibility Test (DHR-BRET).
- National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) Doctoral Scholarship Examination.
- Visvesvaraya Ph.D. Scheme.
- Valid GATE, JEST or ICAR score under Group B, wherever applicable.
For Group B applicants, UGC/CSIR-NET scores obtained in December 2025 and June 2026 will be considered for the 2026–27 academic session. Scores or qualifications in BET, DHR-BRET, NBHM, Visvesvaraya Ph.D. Scheme, GATE, JEST and ICAR must generally have been obtained during 2026, wherever applicable.
Exempted Categories
The following applicants are exempted from the qualifying examination but must appear in the Research Aptitude Test conducted by the concerned department, centre or institute:
- Regular and permanent teachers of the University of Allahabad and its constituent colleges.
- Serving Army, Navy and Air Force officers with at least 10 years of service and holding the rank of Colonel or equivalent, applying for Defence and Strategic Studies.
- Eligible international applicants, subject to University guidelines.
- Eligible Part-Time Ph.D. applicants with at least 10 years of regular service.
- Project Fellows, JRFs, SRFs, Project Associates, Research Assistants or equivalent research personnel working on eligible externally funded research projects at the University.
Part-Time Ph.D. Eligibility
- Master’s degree in the relevant subject with at least 55% marks for UR applicants and 50% marks for EWS/OBC/SC/ST/PwBD applicants.
- Minimum 10 years of regular service in a Government Department, PSU, research and development organisation, recognised institution or reputed industry.
- A No Objection Certificate from the current employer is mandatory.
- Applicants with less than 10 years of service in their present organisation must submit experience certificates from previous employers.
- The applicant must have completed 10 years of service by the last date of online application.
Project Fellow Category
A Project Fellow applicant must fulfil the minimum educational qualification and other qualifying examination conditions, work in an eligible externally funded research project at the University of Allahabad, have at least one year of project tenure remaining from the last date of application, and receive a stipend equal to or higher than the UGC-CSIR JRF fellowship. A No Objection Certificate from the Principal Investigator is mandatory.

Selection Process
- Online registration and submission of the application form.
- Classification into Group A, Group B or Group C.
- Shortlisting for the Research Aptitude Test (RAT).
- Research Aptitude Test before the concerned Departmental Doctoral Programme Committee.
- Interview, with presentation, group discussion, written assessment or other appraisal methods wherever required.
- Preparation of subject-wise, unit-wise and category-wise merit and waiting lists.
- Verification of original documents.
- Approval by the competent authority and provisional admission.
- Successful completion of the mandatory Pre-Doctoral Programme/coursework.
Exam Pattern
The final merit for Group A and Group B applicants will be prepared using the following components:

The qualifying examination score is converted to 70 marks. The Research Aptitude Test carries 30 marks and includes a mandatory interview. The test may also include a presentation, group discussion, written test or another suitable assessment method.
For exempted applicants under Group C, selection will be based on performance in the Research Aptitude Test only. Group B applicants may be shortlisted up to two times the advertised seats, subject to the Government of India reservation policy. Group A and Group C applicants meeting the eligibility conditions will be considered for shortlisting.
Academic performance marks are awarded as follows:

In case of a tie, preference will be given first to the applicant with higher postgraduate marks, then higher undergraduate marks, and finally to the older applicant based on date of birth.
Programme Duration and Conditions
- Regular Ph.D. duration is a minimum of 3 years, including coursework, and a maximum of 6 years from the date of admission.
- Up to 2 additional years may be allowed through re-registration, subject to applicable rules.
- The total completion period is ordinarily limited to 8 years and may extend up to 10 years for female scholars and differently abled scholars with more than 40% disability, as permitted under the regulations.
- Female scholars may receive maternity or childcare leave up to 240 days during the Ph.D. programme.
- The Pre-Doctoral Programme of at least one semester or six months must be successfully completed before continuing in the programme or submitting the thesis.
- The University does not provide scholarship or financial benefit to scholars admitted in its constituent colleges. Financial support may be provided by the concerned college or an external funding agency under its own rules.
- The University does not offer Ph.D. programmes through distance or online mode.
- Part-Time Ph.D. scholars must submit half-yearly progress reports and comply with coursework, publication, plagiarism, pre-submission seminar and thesis evaluation requirements.
- The minimum period for thesis submission for Part-Time Ph.D. scholars is four years.

Reservation
Reservation will be implemented according to Ministry of Education, UGC and Government of India rules:
- SC: 15%
- ST: 7.5%
- EWS: 10%
- OBC Non-Creamy Layer: 27%
- PwBD: 5% horizontal reservation
PwBD applicants must claim the quota in the application form and produce a valid certificate in the prescribed format. Applicants claiming PwBD reservation must appear before the Medical Board constituted by the University.
Documents Required for Verification
Applicants must bring the original documents along with one self-attested copy of each document:
- Qualifying examination score card for Group A and Group B applicants.
- Master’s degree marksheet/certificate.
- Bachelor’s degree marksheet/certificate.
- Intermediate or 10+2 marksheet/certificate.
- High School or Class 10 marksheet/certificate.
- Category certificate in Central Government format, wherever applicable.
- PwBD certificate in Central Government format, wherever applicable.
- No Objection Certificate from the current employer for employed and Part-Time applicants.
- Experience certificate proving minimum 10 years of service for Part-Time applicants.
- Aadhaar Card or other prescribed photo identity proof.
- Two recent passport-size photographs.
- Research proposal or Statement of Purpose, as required by the concerned department.
- Appointment letter, joining report, continuation certificate, remaining-tenure certificate and project sanction order for Project Fellow applicants.
- No Objection Certificate from the Principal Investigator for Project Fellow applicants.
Applicants failing to produce the required documents will not be permitted to participate in the Research Aptitude Test. No TA, DA or accommodation will be provided for attending the Research Aptitude Test.
